If you’re an indoor grower who is willing to invest in his setup, we would recommend thinking about HID (High Intensity Discharge) grow lights. It’s a fantastic source of light for your plants, and in the following paragraphs we’ll be talking about why you should get one of these bulbs. We’ll also review alternative grow lights worth looking into.
Grow Light Guide
Even though it’s an effective grow light, the downside to HID is that it’s not very energy efficient. There are two types of HID grow lights:
Metal Halide Grow Lights
This is probably the best option to grow healthy plants, after the sun of course. This is because it gives out a considerable amount of light in the blue spectrum. It produces 125 lumen per watt of brightness, which is impressive if you compare it to an incandescent bulb which gives you 18 lumen per watt. You can expect an HID bulb to last around 10,000 hours. It might last longer, but after that amount it will begin to give you less light over time. It’s best to buy a new one at that point.
High Pressure Sodium Grow Lights
HPS grow lights work better as a secondary light. For example, if you have a greenhouse, the sun will be the primary source, and you can use an HPS bulb for those plants that don’t get as much sun. Or, you can also use a metal halide bulb as your primary source of light. HPS lights give out light in the orange-red spectrum, which is what most plants need in their flowering period. If you use it for seedlings, the result will be thin and weak plants.
Fluorescent, Incandescent, and LED Grow Lights
Incandescent grow lights are the worst choice to grow plants by far. They produce the least brightness, and they are ineffective for plant growing. The only advantage of these are that they’re inexpensive. Fluorescent grow lights are appropriate, effective, and they consume considerably less energy than HID bulbs. You can expect to grow healthy plants with them. There are also LED grow lights, which are the latest technology in this field. They can work very well, but you have to be willing to experiment and research to get the best possible results.
You have to shop with the end result in mind. If you want the best results possible, and the least margin of error, HID grow lights are the proven path that will get you there. But, you have to consider that the expenses will be higher than if you buy LED grow lights or fluorescent grow lights. These other two options can work great for you as well, but you have to find an amazing product that delivers results, and you can only do this by researching and reading about other people’s experience.
