A few years ago we bought a house with a conservatory out at the back. This is the first time we had owned or lived in a property with a conservatory and when we first saw the house we assumed it would be a space that wouldn’t get much use. Having never had a conservatory, it was difficult to see the point of it.
How Wrong We Were!
Since we moved in, it’s always been one of the most well-used rooms in the house as it’s always bright and, of course, has the best view of the garden. Not only do we often sit in there instead of the living room, but the kids use it to play their board games and do their homework. It’s also nice that it’s a TV-free zone.
Furnishing a Conservatory
The trick with making use of conservatories is obviously the way you choose to furnish them. By putting in table and chairs, you create an instant second dining room. A comfortable sofa and coffee table makes it a den or family room. Our sofa came from one of those clearance sofa offers as we weren’t sure whether the fabric would stand up to so much daylight, so we didn’t want to spend too much on it.
Of course, as time passes, we’ve also added the number of houseplants that live in the conservatory; the main reason is that this is where they thrive. What you have to be careful of, is to not squeeze too many plants in the conservatory, otherwise it becomes less of a room you can use and more of a greenhouse!
Indoors AND Outdoors
The good thing about a conservatory is that you can have the best of both indoors and outdoors. As long as you have a heater in there, you can make good use of the space during winter too.
